WHO IS SEKHMET? The lioness-headed Egyptian Goddess Sekhmet is sometimes portrayed with a knife or a scroll of papyrus in her hands, revealing, perhaps, of the controversy about what her undeniably potent power represented. To some, she was Goddess of War and Battle, of destruction and drunken power, representing the scorching, burning, destructive heat of the sun. To others, the "Lady of Life" was the Source Goddess, she who seeded all other gods and goddesses.

WHY AND HOW DO WE HONOUR HER? In the same way that Sekhmet had the power both to ward off and to bring on pestilence, powerful women experience the paradox of holding both the Crucible and the Spear. Although we have often been advised to hide or repress our Fire Energy when it flames or rages, we know that Fire is the element of transformation. And so, we choose to honour the Energy that is Sekhmet.
In her 2005 article Sekhmet Rising: the Restlessness of Women's Genius, Louise LeBrun pondered "Where would we find ourselves if women were to reclaim the Fire that moves inside them; engage with each other to encourage this reclamation and move as one force to shape the world in which we live?" And, from such pondering, was birthed the Sekhmet Rising Book Project, our way of honouring the Goddess each of us is and the energy that is Sekhmet. Created, edited and published by the WEL-Systems Institute, the book, which was available in June 2006, is a celebration of women who have awakened to and claimed their potential and chosen to share the experience with you. Theresa McKeown's contribution to the project is her experience of "Connecting With the Genuis."
THE EVIDENCE OF SEKHMET'S POWER became very clear to us in January 2006 as we prepared to compile our stories. On an international conference call, discussing the project, we learned that Egyptologists had just unearthed two 3,400-year old statues of the Goddess for whom we had already decided to name and dedicate our book. And with the sharp intake of a breath, as Fire Energy moved in our bodies, we suspected she had chosen to rise again, honouring the Fire Energy that is Sekhmet in women all around the world.
